I agree. [img]smile.gif[/img] I think the internet generation are the ones who abbreviate everything. Me? I like to actually write out the words of what I'm trying to say, just so everyone can get it. It takes more time to descipher geek speak than the time saved by being a lazy typer. People actually understand what eris wrote? And I thought I was a geek....

I always thought of myself as the "video game generation" (I'm 32), since they took off when I was a kid. I remember having several handheld ones in the late 70's (BattleStar Galactiga anyone?) and then getting an Atari in the early 80's. Night Driver was my fave early game. We even had an Intellivison for awhile.

I remember my dad getting cable sometime in the early 80's (the good ole days when MTV played videos). He also got a Beta Max, before VHS took over and wiped them out.

Sadly, the site where I used to view 733+ conversations has been shut down. Some of the mIRC dialogues had me in tears they were so funny.

Internet generation ? that we?re posters on this board qualifies us all for the internet generation, wouldn?t you say?

I?m reminded of the six-year age difference between my brother and myself: when I was an undergrad (1988 ? 1992) I did, in fact, have an email account. All math and engineering majors did. Mine was something like [email protected]. To use it, I had to be at a terminal in the mainframe lab (in cold, dark, basement sublevel 3 of Boelter Hall). Of course, the only other people that had email addresses were the other math and engineering students, who were accessing their accounts in the very same lab. As you can imagine it was just easier to yell across the room. We could email other science-types at other major universities, but that was pretty much the extent of it.

My brother enters college six years later, is issued a legible-name email upon enrollment, and can instantly begin emailing, from the relative comfort of his dorm room, me (at my work account or at my graduate school account, which appeared as Ucla evolved along with everyone else), our parents (on their home accounts) and all of his secondary school classmates, regardless of their university or major. I don?t think he ever wrote a letter on Tulane University stationery the entire time he was there.

I had an Atari 2600, Colecovision, a Nintendo NES, SNES, GameBoy, Sega Genesis, GameGear, Saturn, Dreamcast, and the original gray PlayStation. Plus those Nintendo one-game handhelds, Donkey Kong, Parachute, Octopus and the one with the turtles? My brother found a Q-bert watch for me for Christmas, I was so excited! Right now we have a PS2, the "PS one" mini PlayStation, a Nintendo GameCube, an Xbox, and a Japanese PS2. So yeah, we are of the video game generation. And of the air-guitar generation. Well, language can be used two ways. One, it can be inclusionary. Language can be used to unite people, to communicate with others. Two, it can be exclusionary. Language barriers can be set up to "keep people out" as it were.

I would suspect that the mentality of erecting the language barrier to prove "superiority" is not solely the idea of the new generation of internet freaks, it has been used over and over again. This is just the newest incarnation of an old idea.
